You do not need a long safari to get out of Nairobi. Within two hours of the city there are tea fields, forests, the Great Rift Valley and lakes. Here are five getaways, starting with the closest.

1. Karura Forest (inside Nairobi)

The quickest escape of all. Karura is a large urban forest with walking and cycling trails and waterfalls, run in partnership with the Friends of Karura. Trail bikes can be hired at several gates. Best for: a half-day reset without leaving the city.

2. Tigoni and Limuru (30 km)

The closest real countryside to Nairobi. Rolling tea fields, farm lunches, forest walks and guided e-bike rides, all within about an hour's drive. Best for: a full day out or a relaxed weekend with a night in a farm cottage.

3. The Rift Valley viewpoints (about 1 hour)

On the old Nairobi–Naivasha road, roadside viewpoints look over the floor of the Great Rift Valley, and the tiny chapel built by Italian prisoners of war stands near Mai Mahiu. Best for: combining with Tigoni on the same day.

4. Kereita Forest (about 1–1.5 hours)

In the southern Aberdares, Kereita offers a zip-line course of about 2.2 km and guided forest walks. Best for: an active day with friends.

5. Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate (about 2 hours)

Lake Naivasha has boat rides and lakeside lodges, and nearby Hell's Gate National Park lets you cycle or walk among zebra, giraffe and dramatic gorges. Best for: an overnight trip.

Choosing the right getaway

For a short, easy day with good food and gentle activity, Tigoni is hard to beat. For wildlife, go to Naivasha. For an adrenaline hit, try Kereita. And if you have a free morning, Karura is right on your doorstep.
