Guided tea farm walk

Tea Farm Tours in Tigoni

A guided walk through working tea fields in Tigoni, about 30 km from Nairobi. Learn how tea is grown, picked and sent to the factory, and see the landscape that has been tea country since the early 1900s.

About this activity

How Kenyan tea is grown, up close

Tea has been grown around Tigoni since the early 1900s, and it still covers most of the hills. From the road it looks like a green carpet. Walking between the rows, you see how it actually works: the bushes pruned flat at waist height, the pickers taking only the top two leaves and a bud, and the collection points where the leaf is weighed before going to the factory.

Your guide explains how the altitude, red volcanic soil and two rainy seasons suit tea, how the plants are looked after through the year, and how most Kenyan tea is processed into the black tea used for chai.

The walk is on farm paths and gentle slopes. We agree the route and length with you when you book, based on your group and the weather.
