Where to stay in Tigoni: retreats, country hotels and cottages

Where to spend a night in Tigoni's tea country, how to choose between retreat centres, country hotels and farm cottages, and what to check before booking.

Journal · Published

Most people visit Tigoni for the day, but a night changes the experience. You get the tea fields in the early morning, quiet roads, cold evenings by a fire, and no rush to beat the traffic home. Here is how to choose where to stay.

Retreat and conference centres

Brackenhurst, on the edge of Tigoni, is the best-known option for groups. It has rooms and cottages set in indigenous forest that has been replanted since 2001, walking trails on site, and a café. It suits families, school and church groups, and teams combining a meeting with time outdoors.

Retreat centres are usually the easiest choice for larger groups because rooms, meals and meeting space are under one roof.

Country hotels

Thayu Farm Hotel, off the old Limuru Road, is built around a historic farmhouse that, according to The Standard, once belonged to King George VI. It has gardens and conference facilities. The Kentmere Club is a small country hotel and restaurant near Limuru with a garden terrace and a log fire in the bar.

Country hotels suit couples and small groups who want meals on site and a bit of character.

Farm cottages, cabins and country houses

Many farms in Tigoni rent out cottages, cabins and whole houses, from simple rooms to restored colonial-era homes with large gardens. Search the main booking platforms for Tigoni or Limuru, and you will find options for couples, friends and families.

This is often the most memorable way to stay, but quality varies. Read recent reviews and check the points below before you book.

What to check before you book

  • Heating: nights are cold, especially June to August. Look for a fireplace, heaters or hot water bottles.
  • Access: some cottages are down red-earth tracks that get slippery after rain. Ask whether a normal car can get there.
  • Meals: rural cottages may be a drive from the nearest restaurant. Check whether breakfast or dinner is available.
  • Power and water: ask about backup power and hot water, which matter more in winter.
  • Location: Tigoni is spread out. Check the distance to the places you plan to visit.

A sample overnight stay

Arrive late morning and do a guided tea walk or hike before lunch. Check in during the afternoon, walk near where you are staying, and have an early dinner by the fire. Next morning, go out into the tea while it is still misty, then do a two-hour e-bike ride before lunch and an unhurried drive home.
