Tigoni is one of the easiest day trips from Nairobi: about 30 km away, cooler and greener, and quiet once you leave the main road. This guide covers how to get there, what to book ahead and a simple plan for the day.
Why Tigoni works as a day trip
Many day trips from Nairobi, such as Lake Naivasha or Ol Pejeta, involve two hours or more on the road each way. Tigoni is close enough that you can leave after breakfast and still have a full day. It is also a complete change of scene: rolling tea fields instead of traffic, and temperatures several degrees lower than the city.
The trade-off is that Tigoni has few drop-in attractions. Tea farms, cheese lunches and guided walks need booking, so a little planning goes a long way.

Getting from Nairobi to Tigoni
By car, take Limuru Road north through Muthaiga, Ruaka and Banana Hill. It is the most direct route and runs straight into the tea country, but it can be slow around Ruaka. The alternative is Waiyaki Way through Westlands and Kikuyu, joining the Nairobi–Nakuru highway and turning off towards Limuru.
Allow 45 minutes on a quiet morning and up to an hour and a half at peak times. Without a car, take a matatu to Limuru town and a taxi or ride-hailing car for the last few kilometres.

What to book before you go
Book these at least a few days ahead, and further ahead for weekend groups:
- Any guided activity: an e-bike tour, a tea farm walk or a hike.
- Farm visits such as Kiambethu Tea Farm or Brown's cheese lunches.
- A lunch table at popular weekend spots.
- A tee time at Limuru Country Club, if you play golf.
A sample day
This plan keeps the day relaxed and avoids the worst of the traffic:
- 7:30 – Leave Nairobi.
- 9:00 – Start a guided e-bike ride or tea farm walk.
- 11:30 – Coffee and a short walk, or browse a farm shop.
- 13:00 – Long lunch at a farm restaurant or garden café.
- 15:00 – Stop at a roadside stall for vegetables, or detour to a Rift Valley viewpoint.
- 16:00 – Head back to Nairobi before the evening rush.

What to bring
A warm layer, even if Nairobi is hot when you leave. Closed shoes for farm tracks, which turn to red mud after rain. A rain jacket from March to May and October to December. Cash and M-Pesa for stalls and small cafés. Water and sunscreen for the walk or ride.
Other day trips to combine with Tigoni
If you have a car and an early start, the Rift Valley viewpoints on the old Naivasha road are a short drive west of Limuru. Kereita Forest, with its zip-line course and forest walks, is a full day on its own and is better as a separate trip.
