E-bike tours have become one of the most popular half-day trips from Nairobi, and you can now find them on several booking sites as well as directly from local operators. The rides can look similar online but feel very different on the day. Here is what to check before you book, wherever you book.
Why ride an e-bike near Nairobi
The best countryside around Nairobi is hilly. In the Limuru highlands, the farm roads climb and drop between tea fields at over 2,000 metres, which on an ordinary bicycle would put most visitors off. On a pedal-assist e-bike, the motor helps every time you pedal, so the climbs become easy and you can look at the view instead of your front wheel.
That makes an e-bike tour one of the few outdoor activities near the city that suits almost anyone who can ride a bicycle, from jet-lagged visitors to friends with very different fitness levels.

1. Where does the ride actually go?
Ask where the route runs and on what surface. The appeal of Tigoni is its quiet red-earth farm roads through working tea, away from main-road traffic. A good operator will tell you the kind of terrain to expect, and will change the route on the day if rain has made some tracks too muddy.

2. How big is the group, and who is guiding?
Small groups make a big difference on narrow farm roads: less waiting, more stops for photos, and a guide who can actually talk to you. Our rides are capped at six riders, with a guide who knows the routes, sets the pace for the slowest rider and keeps the group together.
3. What is included?
Check that the price includes the bike, a helmet and a safety briefing, and whether transport, food and drinks are extra. On our e-bike tour the guide, electric bike, helmet and briefing are included; transport to the meeting point and food are not, which keeps the ride itself affordable and lets you arrange the day your way. The ride costs KSh 3,500 for citizens, KSh 4,500 for residents and KSh 5,500 for non-residents.
4. What happens if it rains, or plans change?
Tigoni has two rainy seasons, roughly March to May and October to December. Ask what happens if the weather turns. We check conditions before every ride and reschedule or refund in full if the route is unsafe, and you can cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund of your deposit.
5. Book direct or through a booking site?
International booking sites are convenient, but they add their own fees and you often cannot ask questions before you pay. Booking directly with the operator usually costs less and lets you agree the date, start time and meeting point in one conversation. For our rides, booking directly on WhatsApp is always the best price.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be fit to do an e-bike tour?
No. You need to be comfortable riding a bicycle, but the electric motor does most of the work on the hills and the guide sets an easy pace.
How long is the e-bike tour in Tigoni?
About two hours, with start times at 9:00, 12:00 and 15:00.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes, closed shoes and a warm layer, as Tigoni is cooler than Nairobi. Bring sunscreen and water.
