Golf in Tigoni: Limuru Country Club

A guide to golf at Limuru Country Club in Tigoni: the club's history since 1926, the 18-hole course among the tea, booking a round as a visitor, and making a day of it.

Journal · Published

Limuru Country Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Kenya and one of the most scenic, with fairways laid out among Tigoni's tea fields and tall trees. If you play golf, a round here is a classic way to spend a day in the highlands. (The club is independent of Tigoni Escapes.)

A little history

The club was established in 1926 by colonial-era settlers and is a private members' club. The first holes opened in 1949, and it has since grown to a full 18-hole course that has hosted national and regional amateur events.

The course

The 18-hole, par-71 course runs over rolling ground at altitude, which means cooler playing conditions than in Nairobi and a ball that flies a little further. Tree-lined fairways and views of the surrounding tea make it one of the prettiest courses near the city.

Playing as a visitor

Visitors are welcome, but you need to book ahead. Contact the club directly to arrange a tee time, green fees and caddies, and check the dress code before you go.

Make a day of it

Non-golfers in your group can spend the morning on a tea walk or an e-bike ride while others play, and everyone can meet for lunch afterwards.

Weather tips

Mornings can be misty and cool, especially from June to August, and afternoon showers are common in the rainy seasons. Bring a layer and waterproofs.
