On the edge of Tigoni, Brackenhurst is a retreat and conference centre with an unusual story: over the past two decades, land once planted with exotic trees has been turned back into indigenous forest. Today it is one of the best places near Tigoni for an easy forest walk. (Brackenhurst is independent of Tigoni Escapes.)
From settler farm to forest
Brackenhurst began as a settler farm in the early 20th century, when fast-growing exotic trees such as eucalyptus and grevillea were planted across the land. Later it became a mission centre and then a conference and retreat venue.
From 2001, working with the Kenyan conservation organisation Plants for Life, Brackenhurst began restoring indigenous forest on its grounds. The result is a growing forest of native East African highland trees across roughly a hundred acres.

Walking the trails
Paths wind through the young forest, and the contrast between the native trees and the tea fields outside is striking. The walks are gentle and suitable for families. Birdlife is good, especially in the early morning.

Muna Tree Café
Brackenhurst's Muna Tree Café has garden seating, coffee and simple meals such as pizza and salads. It is a relaxed place to stop before or after a walk.
Staying at Brackenhurst
Rooms and cottages make it a practical base for groups, families and teams, and the conference facilities are used for retreats and workshops. Book directly with Brackenhurst.
Combining with Tigoni activities
A morning e-bike ride or tea walk followed by lunch and a forest stroll at Brackenhurst makes an easy, varied day out.
